Oregon State Printer Essay Example for Free

Oregon State Printer Essay The early history of the individuals who held the situation of state printer uncovers how intently tied the position was to the distribution of papers. Asahel Bush (see photograph) set up the paper the Oregon Statesman, a significant voice for the Democratic Party, in 1851 (Oregon Historical Society). He was named State Printer in 1859 (Morrison). Asahel Bush (1824-1913), first State Printer (Oregon Historical Society) Eugene Semple was the manager of the Oregon Herald from 1869-1873, and he took on the situation of State Printer in 1872 (Corning, p. 219). From 1894-1901 (at any rate), the State Printer was W. H. Leeds. Leeds established the Tidings, a paper in Southern Oregon in 1878 and acknowledged the designation for State Printer in 1894 (Larson). Other people who held the position incorporate Henry L. Pittock (1862), T. Patterson (1870), W. A. McPherson (1870), W. P. Keedy (1880), W. H. Byars (1885), Frank C. Bread cook (1893), and J. R. Whitney (1903). These names are found by examining arrangements of works distributed by the State Printer, as these works bear the name of the printer in the bibliographic data. Oregon State Print Shop, 1890 Changes to the Position and its Oversight The 1857 Constitution requires the State Printer to be a chosen official, anyway this circumstance changed in 1913. In this year, the workplace of the State Printer turned out to be a piece of the Board of Control where it stayed until the 1960s (DAS, p. 2). Now, the State Printer was overseen by the State Printing Board, a gathering involved Board of Control individuals (DAS, p. 2). The Printing Board was answerable for designating the State Printer (DAS, p. 2). This is a significant change in the situation of State Printer, as beforehand this had been a chosen position. In 1967, duties regarding state printing were moved to the Department of General Services (DAS, p. 5). From 1971 to 1973, there existed, as a major aspect of the Department of General Services, a Task Force on State Printing (DAS, p. 6). House Bill 2235 wiped out the situation of State Printer and doled out the Oregon Department of Administrative Services to play out the obligations of State Printer (House Bill 2235, 2001). The Department of Administrative Services was made in 1993 by consolidating the Department of General Services and the Executive Department (DAS, p. 1). Printing administrations are executed by the Procurement, Fleet, and Surplus Service Division of the (DAS, p. 12). These various changes to the position and its oversight were talked about by the House Committee on E-Government in 2001. As Fariborz Pakseresht clarified, mergers during the 1990s had basically annulled the situation of the State Printer (Minutes 2001). One issue with the position was the essential experience, required by the Constitution. As State Printer Mike Freese attested, the ten-year experience prerequisite for the situation of State Printer was viewed as obsolete (Minutes 2001). Furthermore, Representative Lowe raised monetary and environmental issues when he addressed whether changes to the position would wind up setting aside the state cash and would be progressively biological in decreasing paper utilization (Minutes 2001). In spite of these changes, in 2005, the situation of State Printer despite everything existed as Mike Freese is recorded as State Printer in minutes from gatherings in both 2001 and 2005 (Minutes, 2001 and 2005). For sure, the 2008 form of the Oregon Constitution despite everything accommodates the situation of State Printer: Laws might be sanctioned accommodating the state printing and official, and for the political decision or arrangement of a state printer, who will have had at least ten years’ involvement with the specialty of printing. The state printer will get such pay as may every now and then be given by law. Until such laws will be instituted the state printer will be chosen, and the printing done as up until now gave by this constitution and the general laws. (Oregon State Archives, 2008 Constitution). What is captivating about the wording of this article from the Constitution is that it is by all accounts purposely dubious: the State Printer might be chosen (as in the 1857 Constitution) or delegated (as it was since 1913). Moreover, this article despite everything requires the ten-years obligatory involvement with the field that Freese had addressed in 2001. Obligations of the State Printer As noted in the Constitution of 1857, when the position was made, the State Printer is liable for all open printing for the State of Oregon. As per House Bill 2235, need is given to the distribution of materials identified with crafted by the Legislative Assembly (counting its officials and advisory groups). Furthermore, the debut address of each new senator is required to be printed by the DAS. The Department of Agriculture may, yet isn't required to, utilize the DAS to distribute reports and measurements. As per House Bill 2235, any material that publicizes or advances items doesn't fall under the space of this position (House Bill 2235, 2001). Another obligation of the State Printer is uncovered in House Bill 2235. This Bill uncovers that the State Printer had recently held the undertaking of printing the register of gun proprietorship (House Bill 2235, 2001). This obligation had been moved to the State Police in 1991 (Senate Bill 32). The State Printer additionally distributed volumes containing biennial reports from the State Penitentiary, from 1868 to 1913 (Oregon State Archives, Department of Corrections). In House Bill 2235, the obligations of the State Printer that the Department of Administrative Services is presently answerable for incorporate the accompanying: control and deal with all state printing, control all state printing buys, decide and fix the cost for all work done by those in this position, produce numerous duplicates of records, buy gear for copying reports. Financial Issues As noted above, Representative Lowe had pondered in 2001 whether changes to the situation of State Printer could set aside the state cash. This appears to have been a worry for other government authorities as monetary concerns are as often as possible referenced in banters about the position. In 1921, a law was authorized which permitted state workplaces outside of Marion County to work with private endeavors that could underbid the State Printing Department (DAS, p. 3). It shows up, in any case, that organizations had tried to work with out-of-state organizations. This unexpected circumstance, with out-of-state organizations printing Oregon State records, was tended to in 1931. In this year, this law was additionally changed with the arrangement that these outside agreements must be for organizations in Oregon except if the costs cited by these organizations were â€Å"excessive and not sensibly competitive† (DAS, p. 3). House Bill 2235 despite everything takes into consideration a portion of the printing work to be contracted out to different organizations. This Bill uncovers that state organizations are not required to utilize the administrations of the State Printer (or, for this situation, the DAS) in the event that they can exhibit that a similar quality work can be found for a lower cost (House Bill). This possibility is, as Mike Freese clarified, a protection from against singular offices setting up little, wasteful printing shops (Minutes, 2001). The State Printer and Dissemination of Information notwithstanding satisfying open printing for the express, the State Printer had different errands that show how imperative this position was to the spread of government archives and to making these records accessible to the overall population. In 1907, Senate Bill 136 was passed. This bill required the State Printer to store duplicates of state distributions at the State Library (Wan). In the early history of the storehouse program, various duplicates of the records were submitted †up to 50 duplicates of authoritative bills and schedules, and 125 duplicates of administrative between time board of trustees reports (Wan). In any case, in 1979, the quantity of duplicates that the State Printer was required to submit to the library was normalized. Starting here, 45 duplicates were required to be sent to the State Library (Wan). In 1994, additional progressions were initiated to the safe program, drove by individuals from the Documents Interest Group of Oregon (Wan). In 2001 (as per House Bill 2235), 45 duplicates were as yet required to be submitted to the State Library. Since July 2006, the Oregon State Electronic Depository has been in activity. This program plans to gather and chronicle electronic variants of state archives so data that is hung on the web doesn't get lost when pages are refreshed. Singular offices are required to submit electronic duplicates of the suitable reports to the Oregon State Library (Wan). Be that as it may, organizations are as yet required to remove ten printed copies of each record (Wan). The distribution of state records is archived in the quarterly Checklist of Official Publications of the State of Oregon, distributed by the State Library starting during the 1960s (Wan). This distribution finished in 1979 and was supplanted by a microfiche version of the library’s list (Wan). The microfiche index, be that as it may, was fleeting and quit being created during the 1980s (Wan). Through the cooperation of the duties of the State Printer with the library framework, we can perceive how the errands of the State Printer influenced the overall population. Blog Archive Why Personalized Recommendations Matter, but Some Details May Not

Blog Archive Why Personalized Recommendations Matter, but Some Details May Not If your supervisor is writing your business school recommendation and you are having trouble ensuring that they are putting the proper thought and effort into your letter, you are not alone. Because of this asymmetry of power, junior employees can only do so much to compel their supervisor to commit the necessary time and write thoughtfully.  So, before you designate your supervisor as a recommender, you must first determine how committed this person really is to helping you with your business school candidacy. In particular, your recommender needs to understand that using a single template to create identical letters for multiple business schools is not okay. Each letter must be personalized, and each MBA program’s questions must be answered using specific examples. If your recommender intends to simply write a single letter and force it to “fit” the school’s questions or to attach a standard letter to the end of the school’s recommendation form (for example, including it in the question “Is there anything else that you think the committee should know about the candidate?”), then they could be doing you a disservice. By neglecting to put the proper time and effort into your letter, your  recommender is sending a very clear message to the admissions committee: “I don’t really care about this candidate.” If you cannot convince your recommender to write a personalized letter or to respond to your target school’s individual questions using specific examples, look elsewhere. A well-written personalized letter from an interested party is always far better than a poorly written letter from your supervisor. In addition, although details are important in recommendation letters, remember that sometimes small points in MBA applications are really just thatâ€"small points. We often get asked, “Should this be a comma or a semicolon?” and want to respond, “Please trust us that the admissions committee will not say, ‘Oh, I would have accepted this applicant if she had used a comma here, but she chose a semicolon, so DING!’” That said, we are certainly not telling you to ignore the small things. Essay about Public School vs Private School - 700 Words

There are different types of education that a student may receive in today’s society. The choices are narrowed down into two main categories, public and private school. Many people in today’s society believe it’s better to send their children to private schools rather than public schools. To most parents deciding which school system will be better is based on curriculum, class size, and most of all cost. It’s not an easy choice for parents to decide, but many parents feel their child is worth receiving the best education offered. The quality of teaching and the expectations of the students differ from the two schools. The question regularly asked is, â€Å"Can I afford to send my child to private school?† Public schools are funded by tax dollars, whereas private schools demand tuition from their students. With private schools able to charge for tuition, and many charge for textbooks and materials, some offer scholarships for students to help with what is commonly a great final cost. Public schools are prohibited from charging for tuition, or other fees that could incur, such as: transportation, materials, and textbooks. Most of the time if public schools need more money for education, taxes are raised. Preventing Teenagers from Trouble - 581 Words

There have long been debates by parents and teenagers on whether or not there are benefits for establishing a curfew. A curfew is a designated hour that requires people to remain indoors. Curfews are typically set in place by parents for their teenagers to return home at a certain time at night. There are a numerous amount of compelling arguments that support each side of the idea about curfews. Although there are many arguments that can be made, there are a number of positive factors that lead to the belief that curfews should be implemented in a household atmosphere. An important feature of a teenager’s curfew is family time. Spending time with family is essential for maintaining the relationships within the household. During the school week, teens tend to carry busy schedules with schoolwork and extracurricular activities. For followers of Christianity, this significant place is a church. Without the church community, meaning the people who belong to the church, the church could be just any another brick buildingRead MoreI Appreciate Barbour s Praiseworthy And Toil some Effort914 Words   |  4 PagesIII. Cloning Endangered Species Essay Research Paper Cloning free essay sample

Cloning Endangered Species Essay, Research Paper Cloning is the production of duplicate transcripts of familial stuffs, cells, or full multi-cellular life stuffs. For old ages cloning had merely been a phantasy, but with new scientific research cloning can be really successful. Because there are so many advantages in countries like agribusiness, medical specialty, and biological research in bring forthing genetically indistinguishable beings, unreal cloning has become the focal point of attending with scientists today. # 8220 ; At last there is hope of salvaging endangered species. We might be able to witness the cloning of now about nonextant condors, Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelams, rhinoceroses, and so many other populating marvels. # 8221 ; That was a quotation mark from Jose F. Jaramillo ; a adult male who has written many essays on the hope of cloning endangered species. There are so many animate beings that are about nonextant which could profit greatly by cloning. Cloning endangered species would take a batch of clip and it would be and highly hard procedure. It took 276 attempts to clone Dolly. So at the minute the success rate of cloning endangered animate beings is really low. But it is really possible to make. The history of cloning goes back to 1938 when a German scientist suggested taking the karyon, which contains the cistrons, from an egg cell and replacing it with the karyon from another cell, but back so the tools and engineering to make such a undertaking didn # 8217 ; t exist. Then, in 1952, scientists took the karyon out of the cell of a frog embryo and set it into a denucleated toad cell, but the egg didn # 8217 ; t develop. In 1970, another scientist tried to make the same thing. But this clip the eggs hatched and went into tadpole manner. But the polliwogs ever died. Finally in 1984, scientists reported the successful cloning of a sheep. Cells from an early post-fertilization phase of development were taken out and set into a denucleated egg of a 2nd sheep. The 2nd sheep gave birth to a healthy lamb with cells holding the cistrons from the original. In 1994 calf ringers were produced. In 1996 scientists in Scotland cloned a sheep named Dolly. Cloning has neer been tried on endangered species before. But since cloning has been done on other mammals it is really possible that it can be done on endangered species. It seems that congressional attempts to do cloning illegal are speed uping. Besides, Congress may travel beyond clon ing, they may seek to halt research on of import new sterility therapies. Many people are stating that cloning endangered species merely isn # 8217 ; t ethical, while others are stating that it must be done before they go nonextant. Presently nil but debating the attempts of cloning is traveling on. Presently scientists are seeking to happen possible ways to clone human existences, but dissenters are acquiring in the manner conveying up the moralss of it all, one anon. citizen stated, # 8220 ; It merely is non ethical. Why should we be cloning human existences while at the same clip excessively many are being produced every twenty-four hours of course # 8221 ; A measure was written by Sampson G. Smith to promote the cloning of cloning of endangered species. It fundamentally says that cloning can merely be operated by qualified scientists and approved companies and we will be able to clone endangered species before they go nonextant. Some endangered species that are being killed are elephants for it # 8217 ; s tusk, the sharks for their and giants for their oils, the leopard for it # 8217 ; s pelt, and the rhinoceroses for their horns. Many species all over the universe are going endangered and really near to going nonextant. Cloning is needed to salvage these animate beings from extinction. Extinct animate beings would be really difficult to clone. A female can # 8217 ; t usually give birth to an animate being of a different species, but it is non yet clear whether a female of a closely related species could give birth to a ringer of a different species. Genes can mutate, or all of a sudden alteration, as a consequence of exposure to normal background radiation or certain chemicals or other influences. And some mutants may be deadly. Who know what could go on when you have a ringer with mutants. A large issue of concern when cloning is what this ringer may convey in the universe. They could be conveying new diseases into this universe that have non been here earlier and spread it to other animals and worlds. I think that if we could clone endangered species it would be fantastic. We could take a walk outside and see beautiful animals in individual that before we could merely see in images. I think that cloning should be started right off before some of these animate beings go nonextant and we will neer hold the opportunity to see one of all time once more. The procedure of this should be good thought out and the species with the lowest population should be cloned foremost. Comton # 8217 ; s Encyclopedia

Chicken Or Egg Essays - Chicken, Chicken Or The Egg, Paradoxes

Chicken Or Egg Which came first, Chicken? Or Egg? The answer is that this is the wrong question. The trouble here is the word Firsts. A human life contains many firsts, so the word comes easily to our lips. For example, a creationist could ask how the metamorphosis of a butterfly occurred for the First time. French is called a Romance language because it is descended from Roman, or to be more specific, Classical Latin. Across the last 2,000 years, the language changed piece by piece, a word or emphasis at a time. Documents from many of the centuries between, are written in a language somewhere between the two, not quite Latin, yet not quite French. So who was the first person to speak French? I think its plain to see that this was a very gradual evolution of the language. There was not first French speaker. Was there a first chicken? Some say there was. But Darwin suggests that species evolve slowly, over time. So imagine a lizard, which laid a lizard egg. Millions of years later, its descendant was a chicken, which lays a chicken egg. But there was no moment when chicken-ness suddenly leapt into existence. Similarly, there was no first land animal, no first lung, and no first skeleton. Current scientific beliefs say that all of these came bit by bit. In short, if a species was created abruptly, then a chicken-and-egg question makes sense. But if that species evolved, then there was no first chicken, and there was no first egg, the only true first was the original single celled organism that was created by a spontaneous chemical reaction in the primordial soup that was early Earth, from which all life as we know it evolved. Understanding the Darkness of Writer Edgar Allan Poe

Understanding the Darkness of Writer Edgar Allan Poe When trying to get into the mind and works of 19th century American writer Edgar Allan Poe, it is important to first consider his biographical implications – his life experiences – which the influence the work of all artists. His darker works, like the short stories â€Å"The Tell-Tale Heart† and â€Å"The Fall of the House of Usher,† as well as his famous poem â€Å"Annabel Lee,† all deal with death, sickness, the grotesque, the macabre, even insanity. He is a subject studied by many literary scholars, mostly due to his deeply impressionable and penetrating works that are still read and discussed at length today. One can examine Poe’s life experiences, as well as his obsessions and fears, to better understand the meaning behind his most famous works. He experienced death and loss throughout his life, starting from a young age with the untimely death of his mother just a short time after Poe’s father abandoned the family. Also, years later, his young wife, Virginia Poe, died at the age of 24 due to Tuberculosis. Quite naturally, these horrific events had a definite impact on his life and how he related to people, got close to them, and how he saw the life experience, and this naturally seeped into his creative life: his famous writings. Very little of Poe’s life was pleasant, it seems. After achieving literary success with his famous poem â€Å"The Raven† in 1845, Poe – then 36 years of age – seemed to head downhill. He became a literary celebrity quite young, only to die a few years later a broken, ill, lonely and pathetic man on a rainy, empty street one night in Baltimore, Maryland. He was just 40 years of age. Poe was thought to be a drunk, a womanizer, drug addict and a madman. His life was, unfortunately, one of pain, heartache, and suffering – mostly due to the loss of many of his dearest loved ones. Take a look at his most popular works. They are filled with death and horror, tales and stories that even today demonstrate the work of an insane man – maybe even a brilliant one, both of which are often hard to distinguish in Poe’s works. His poem â€Å"Annabel Lee,† tells of a young couple so deeply in love that even the angels in Heaven were envious. They marry but she ultimately falls ill and is taken away from him, she dies too young, and the narrator is left with the cruel memory of the powerful love they shared. This tragic, though famous, poem is evidently the result of losing his young bride, Virginia. It follows the exact same storyline of Poe’s life, and the famous poem was published just a few years after the untimely death of his young bride. This theme of loss, death, and pain runs in other Poe works, as well. In examining â€Å"The Tell-Tale Heart,† his famous, horrific short story, the reader sees the other side of Poe’s dark tendencies. This time, instead of a person losing a loved one, the narrator becomes â€Å"mad† and plays God himself: he kills another person in cold blood because the narrator is obsessed with the man’s frightening â€Å"vulture† eye. Nothing in Poe’s life provides any insight as to this particular tale and this particular indication of mental illness, but one can point to his assumed madness and depression in order to further understand exactly why Poe wrote it. Perhaps he enjoyed the thought of taking the life of another perhaps because God took the life of his closest loved ones. It may have been a revenge fantasy or a defense mechanism. To conclude, writer Edgar Allan Poe was a dark soul who wrote even darker works of English literature. More than 150 years after his death, Poe is still talked about and highly read in classrooms all across the world. In just a short life, he accomplished so much. And it should be acknowledged that he was at least able to turn such a painful experiences into beautiful works of art. His legacy will endure as long as people experience pain and suffering.

To reach them, the solution is to offer its employees a holistic approach of classes in Spanish, culture sensitivity, the differences and similarities that exist within the Hispanic community, history, traditions, and customs. It will also make the transition of obtaining positive results from international business transactions with Spanish speaking countries. Although, Hispanics come from different countries they may not be aware of the differences and the similarities. The non-Hispanics are not aware of what these differences and similarities may be. Forecasting future trends in digital crime and digital terrorism Research Paper

Forecasting future trends in digital crime and digital terrorism - Research Paper Example digital crime and terrorism large number of analysis and data collection is being done all over the world to minimize the digital terror (Taylor, Tory J. Caeti, & Eric J. Fritsch, 2006). People are finding new ways to stay protected from such crimes which are unethical. The eight forecasts that can help stop these crimes are as follows: As the number of cyber-crimes increases, the number of reports will also increase drastically. For this reason officers need to be trained with respect to the new emerging technologies. Also, the attorneys and judges should have more knowledge about these crimes. Recent studies show that that officer in computer crime department are overworked and are stressed. Therefore they need better training to cope up with the technology. Many reports have been received about people complaining that they are getting hurtful comments from unknown individuals. For this reason new laws are being developed to prevent and challenge these crimes and attorneys and judges are being acknowledged (Raisinghani, 2004). The second forecast is the major threat to people which is the internet fraud. Large number of people will be affected by this terror in many ways such as identity theft. Identity theft can be done from a stranger or even a member of family. It is usually done for financial gain. Now days when everyone has internet at their homes people use internet to buy many products. This brings up the identity theft problem. For this reason it is necessary to notify individuals about the emerging problem (Taylor, Tory J. Caeti, & Eric J. Fritsch, 2006). The third forecast is to create new laws and also to come up with new methodologies to fight these crimes, that is, people should have more education about them, how to prevent such crime and also how the investigation should be done. As very soon these crimes will occur in larger of numbers. For example: cyber stalking. It is the act of harassing people electronically through text messages, email

Security Enhanced Linux (Selinux) Essay Example for Free

Security Enhanced Linux (Selinux) Essay Security Enhanced Linux (Selinux), Chroot Jail, and Iptables Three of the most important types of Linux security technologies are Security Enhanced Linux (SELinux), chroot jail, and iptables. This security measures aide in the subversion of theft and malicious activity. We will discuss these items in depth to address who created them and for what reason. Along with how these technologies changed the operating system to enforce security, and the types of threats that these security systems are design to eliminate. Security Enhanced Linux was released in December of 2000 from the National Security Agency (NSA), under the GNU general public license. SELinux is not a Linux distribution; it is a set of kernel modifications and tools that can be added to a variety of Linux distributions. SELinux is currently a part of Fedora Core, and it is supported by Red Hat. Incarnations of SELinux packages are also available for Debian, SuSe, and Gentoo. Security-enhanced Linux is a set of patches to the Linux kernel and some utilities to incorporate a strong, flexible Mandatory Access Control (MAC). The Chroot system call was introduced during the development of Version 7 Unix in 1979, and added by Bill Joy on 18 March 1982, a year and a half before 4.2BSD was released in order to test its installation and build system. A chroot on a UNIX based operating systems, like Linux, is an operation that changes the apparent root directory for the current running process and its children. A program that is run in such a modified environment cannot name or access files outside the designated directory tree. On a web server, it is very useful for the security of shared hosting accounts. Without a chroot jail a user with limited file permissions can navigate to the top level directories. Although that user does not have permission to make changes, they can invade the files and access information. An important use of chroot is it’s utilization within virtual environments. In a Virtual Private Server, the user has a complete operating system within a chroot directory. This user has root privileges for his or her own account, but can’t access higher directories or be aware of their existence. Virtualization is great for test environment that can be set up in the chroot for software that might be too risky to deploy on a production system. Virtual environments are often used for compatibility issues. Legacy software or software using a different interface must sometimes be run in a chroot because their supporting libraries or files may otherwise clash with those of the host system. Also chroot is often used for recovery purposes. A chroot can be used to move back into a damaged environment after bootstrapping from an alternate root file system. Elevated Privileges in iptables are required for operation, and root user must be used or iptables will not function. With most Linux systems, iptables is installed as /usr/sbin/iptables and documented in its man page, which can be opened using man iptables. There is a set of user interface tools that can be used to manage your system’s security profile in a more user friendly manner. The user interface firewall management tools include Bastille, and GUI tools with like KDE’s Guard dog. There are Linux distributions whose main purpose is to provide a GUI front end to iptables with a variety of configurations. Iptables allows the system administrator to define tables containing chains of rules for the treatment of packets. Each table is associated with a different style of packet processing. Packets are processed by sequentially traversing the rules in chains. A rule in a chain can cause a goto or jump to another chain, and this can be repeated to whatever level of nesting is desired and every network packet arriving at or leaving from the computer traverses at least one chain. First, you have Paco, a rebellious teen that loves a fight, and is in a small East Los Angeles street gang called â€Å"Vatos Locos.† Then, there is his half brother Cruz, he is trying to stray away from the gang life by painting, however, he still is and hangs with the Vatos Locos. Lastly, with blonde hair, blue eyes, and white skin, there is Miklo the cousin of Cruz and Paco, who ran away from his white father to reconect with his Mexican roots. The only problem is Miklo does not look Chicano, and the Mexican community, including Paco, have a hard time accepting him into the world he so much wants to be a part of. His friends call him names like â€Å"white boy† or â€Å"guero† to make fun of his skin. Miklo though, is determined to gain the respect of his peers, he decides that he too wants to be a â€Å"Vato Loco,â₠¬ which doesn’t sit very well with Paco. He tells Miklo, â€Å"Do white boys get VL placas (tattoos)? No, it doesn’t happen. Unless†¦Ã¢â‚¬ and that’s where it all starts. Paco decides that his cousin can be part of the Vatos Locos, but since he is half white, he will have to prove himself to the group, by doing something big for them. Miklo quickly obliges, and bashes out the window of a rival gang called â€Å"Tres Puntos.† With that Miklo gets to be in the â€Å"in crowd† as he always wanted to be. Tres Puntos not agreeing with this, takes it out on Cruz, and thus starts a gang war. Things become even worse when at a war between the two gangs, Miklo shoots and kills the head member Spider. This brings on even bigger problems then Miklo can imagine: San Quentin Prison. Suddenly, everything Miklo learned in the street gang becomes obsolete, and he is back to being an outsider with no one to turn to. The AV’ers, a clique of white males in prison, want Miklo to side with them, but Miklo does not want any part of them. Instead, he wants to hang with the Mexican clique, La Onda, which do not want anything to do with this â€Å"guero† (white boy in Spanish). They pick on him, call him names, and do not want him within their sight.

Definition paper on the word “Strength” Essay

Strength is more then just a physical word. It is a word of high stature. Strength can be used in three ways; physical, mental, and spiritual. Strength is the quality of being physically strong, capacity to sustain the application of force without yielding or breaking, effectiveness, and concentration. Strength is a word that is a greatly misinterpreted from time to time. To some, strength is only in physical form, but for others strength comes with emotions and spirituality. Physical strength is a good thing to have for your personal benefit. To be physically fit is good for your health and for the protection of you and others. To have physical strength is a great asset, but for some a mere burden. For the bully who abuses his physical strength, it could lead to anguish and pain for him and others. Is a man strong when he hits his wife or is a man strong when he offers comfort? That’s were mental strength comes into play. Mental strength can be one of the best things to have. To be able to control a situation is a great thing. When we get older we gain more mental strength, because our minds gain more knowledge. Karate teaches self defense, but their main focus is on mental strength. The instructors  teach their students to only use karate as self defense. That it takes more strength to not use karate then it does to actually use it. In a relationship mental strength is the top quality. â€Å"It takes a lot of mental strength to focused and stay married for twenty-nine years.†(John Hart) Teaching anything and everything involves a lot of mental strength (patience). For some having attractive features can lead to over confidence, niaveness, and broken relationships. For others having beauty is not taken lightly and put it to good use by being faithful to their mates which takes mental strength by choosing not to be a rover. Spiritual strength takes a lot of self assurance. Strength in the religious world comes from within. Faith and trust are the strong reminders for those in their beliefs. Is a pastor strong because he stays in a church that is conspiring against him and lost their ability to hear the word of God through their Pastor, or is he strong when he chooses to leave? I would have to say that a Pastor has to be wise and listen to God telling him its time to go and be a fresh voice to others. It takes strength to discern from what the Devil wants us to believe and the truth. Spiritual strength can come in hard times as well as good. Consider a mans thoughts when he suffers a tragic fall and becomes a paraplegic and has to spend the rest of his life looking up to short people, having to ask for the simplest of help (wheel chair getting stuck in a small hole), or simply having to behave or else. Spiritual weakness can come in the form of  cursing God for our misfortune and asking him why Spiritual strength is accepting that the Bible tells us there is a reason for all things. To some spiritual strength is doing good deeds and keeping a record of them. I have seen people of strong spiritual strength who never seem to waiver in challenging times. Job was a man of spiritual strength and I know personally I would not want to suffer as much or the way he did. Job was a man of all three strengths, physical, mental and spiritual.

The Shutdown Of Public Mental Health - 1614 Words

In recent years, evidence and studies have proven that the shutdown of various mental health facilities across the nation has caused a dramatic increase in the number of incarcerations for people who suffer from mental illness. In 2006, the Bureau of Justice Statistics calculated that there were approximately 705,600 mentally ill adults incarcerated in state prisons, 78,800 mentally ill adults incarcerated in federal prisons, and 479,900 mentally ill adults incarcerated in local jails (â€Å"Mentally Ill†). In response to the increase in the number of incarcerations and news stories, people around the nation developed harmful stigmas towards mentally ill people. According to Sarah Glazer’s article entitled Prisoners and Mental Illness, the state governments do not allocate enough spending to mental health care. In the hopes of reducing funding and saving money, many state governments across the nation forced the shutdown of public mental health facilities, which led to an increase in crimes committed by mentally ill people. According to Dr. Marie E. Rueve and Dr. Randon S. Welton’s article entitled â€Å"Violence and Mental Illness†, society believes that mentally ill people are worthless and violent, which is a negative impact of the increase in crimes committed by mentally ill people. In response to the stigma created by society, many people believe that the mentally ill deserve incarceration in order to keep them from harming other members of the community. Sonnet 29 Essay Example For Students

Sonnet 29 Essay Word Count: 370Sonnet #29Despite popular belief, William Shakespeare was considered a great poet before a great playwright. He accomplished writing at least 154 sonnets and other poems of love. In this paper, I will analyze one of his greatest sonnets. One of the most famous of his sonnets is number XXIX. This sonnet is one long sentence, but it still follows the usual Shakespearean pattern of three quatrains (four line sections) and a couplet. It also follows the traditional rhyme scheme for Shakespearian sonnets: ababcdcdefefgg. The first quatrain tells how the narrator is feeling. From reading these four lines, you sense his loneliness and sense of abandonment by fate, G-d, love, and other men. I believe the key line in this quatrain is line 3 (When, in disgrace with fortune and mens eyes,). Here I feel Shakespeare is saying that this person who isvery depressed, is crying out for help to others, but he is such an outcast that not even deaf heaven, meaning God and the angels of heaven or listening to his cries. The second quatrain starts off with a line that shows the narrator wishes to be more optimistic. He realizes that in order to achieve his goals, he must believe in himself first and stop being so depressed. The second half of the quatrain shows he is envious of other mens possessions and riches when he says, Desiring this mans art and that mans scope, With what I most enjoy contented least. Moving into the third quatrain, you see that the speaker begins to reflect on himself and starts to compare himself with his friends. You know this when Haply I think on thee, and then my state, is said. Just as you start to think the speaker is going back into a state of self-pity, you realize the speakers inspired sprits are rising like the lark at break of day. Sonnet XXIX ends with a couplet that has an uplifting message. One the speaker remembers the love of his friend and what great things he has, it makes him happy with his life. So happy he wouldnt even consider swapping his place with a king.

Penelope Is a Real Hero

Odysseus has often been regarded as the only hero in the famous Homer’s epic Odyssey. It is but natural as the epic goes under the name Odyssey and it focuses on Odysseus’s adventures. Nonetheless, there are many other heroes. It is important to note that males have been ascribed to heroic deeds, e.g.Advertising We will write a custom research paper sample on Penelope Is a Real Hero specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Odysseus and his men, or Telemachus (Clayton 18). However, women also play an important role in the story. Goddesses, shadows and living women help men in their activities. Of course, Athena, the goddess of warfare and wisdom, helps Odysseus in many affairs. However, the goddess should not be regarded as a heroine as she does not belong to the world of humans. As far as the heroines pertaining to the world of humans are concerned, one of the main heroines to be admired is Penelope, Odysseus’s wife w ho is faithful, wise and even as cunning as her husband. In fact, Penelope should be considered a hero as she manages to rule the kingdom (Ithaca), she is ready to sacrifice her entire life for the sake of her son, Telemachus, and she manages to remain faithful to her husband due to her wisdom and cunning. The Wise Ruler When analyzing the role of the queen in the story, it is crucial to remember about the role of women in the Ancient Greek society. Thus, Clark and Schwiebert point out that Penelope is to fulfill tasks which â€Å"must be relatively safe, can easily be interrupted and resumed, and must require minimal movement from home† (164). Penelope being a woman has to comply with these rules. However, the queen is in quite a specific position. She does not have her husband beside her to run the house and the entire kingdom. It is necessary to note that the epic does not focus on Penelope as a ruler. Nonetheless, it is clear that Penelope plays a very important role in h er kingdom even though it is not revealed explicitly. Thus, Odysseus meets his mother and inquires her about Penelope. The woman describes Penelope’s position in the following way: Still with her child indeed she is, poor heart, still in your palace hall. But no man takes your honored place. Telemakhos has care of all your garden plots and fields, and holds the public honor of a magistrate, feasting and being feasted†¦ (Homer 351) The first part of this speech suggests that Penelope is only weeping and doing some female job in the house. It may seem that Telemachus is the real ruler of the kingdom as he takes care of all public affairs, and he also runs their lands. Nonetheless, it is clear that the young ruler resorts to his mother’s help who gives valuable advice on various matters. The first line of the speech confirms that Penelope is beside her son helping him in any possible way. Of course, it is impossible to claim that Penelope is as powerful as any other ruler, or Odysseus himself, as she is still just a woman in the Ancient Greek society. Nonetheless, Penelope’s role is somewhere in between (Clayton 19). It is possible to claim that she is the ‘à ©minence grise’ of Ithaca who manages to keep the wealth and glory of the kingdom.Advertising We will write a custom research paper sample on Penelope Is a Real Hero specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Vetter claims that weaving is one of the most important symbols in the epic (33). Of course, it is the symbol of memory as Penelope is thinking about Odysseus while weaving. Apart from this, Penelope’s weaving can also be regarded as a symbol of her â€Å"status within her household, the city of Ithaka† (Vetter 33). On one hand, she fulfills purely female tasks like weaving. On the other hand, she guides her son and helps him to be a wise ruler. She creates a covert web which covers the entire kingdom and keeps its order. It is necessary to add that that the woman has to live under a great pressure as she is doomed to hear news about her heroic husband and she still thinks he is dead. She cannot bear listening to songs about her courageous husband: â€Å"†¦ But sing no more / this bitter tale that wears my heart away† (Homer 233). Nonetheless, the woman finds strength to think of her son and the entire kingdom. She manages to be thoughtful even in her grief. Admittedly, this is one of the features ascribed to heroes. Penelope’s Self-Sacrifice Furthermore, she is not only a wise and strong ruler. She is also a loving mother. She is also ready to sacrifice her entire life to secure her son’s future. She has to comply with the necessity to remarry as her so n â€Å"is suffering as a result of the suitors’ devouring of his resources† (Said 298). The woman has to think of remarriage as her family as well as her son force her to do this as all think that Odysseus is no more alive: â€Å"Odysseus was not the only one at Troy / never to know the day of his homecoming† (Homer 234). Even Odysseus himself forces her to marry as on his departure he claims that she should remarry in case he does not come back when their son is already adult (Vetter 33). The wretched woman loves her husband and believes he is still alive and she hopes that her husband will come and take revenge: Ah, if he comes again, no falcon ever struck more suddenly than he will, with his son,Advertising Looking for research paper on literature languages? (Homer 445) However, she still cannot lament for the rest of her life as she is to take care of her child (Heitman 63). She understands that many people would like to be the rulers of Ithaca. She also understands that she is not able to resist all those suitors who can soon become enemies. These enemies can bring their troops to the gates of Ithaca. Thus, Penelope understands that only women, her young son and her old wretched father-in-law cannot resist an army of trained warriors. She understands that any resistance will lead to the fall of her homeland: â€Å"spurn them she dare not, though she hates that marriage† (Homer 231). Her son reveals the graveness of their position: We have no strong Odysseus to defend us, and as to putting up a fight ourselves – we’d only show our incompetence in arms. (Homer 237) She has to find the way out. The only way out for her is another marriage. She has to marry one of the suitors. Admittedly, this deed can be seen as incompatible to heroic deeds. However, in this case Penelope does perform a heroic deed. She sacrifices her feelings, and even her life to save her son and her land from destruction. Of course, she does not lead an army and she does not defeat her enemies. However, her submission should be considered heroic. Furthermore, sacrifice is often regarded as a heroic deed, no matter what kind of sacrifice it is. Therefore, Penelope is one of those heroes who sacrifice something for the good. She is not concerned with her own destiny as she strives to save her land and her son. This courage is inspiring. More so, even some men depicted in the epic do not reveal the same courage and self-sacrifice. Admittedly, Penelope should be considered as one of the heroes of the epic. Penelope’s Faithfulness She Tries the Suitors Apart from her readiness to sacrifice everything, Penelope has the courage and wits to remain faithful to her husband. In the first place, she tries to postpone the day she should make her decision. She is as cunning as her husband. She manages to deceive her suitors for three years weaving and unweaving (Heitman 63). At the same time she never stops inquiring about her husband: Every time some traveller comes ashore he has to tell my mistress his pretty tale, and she receives him kindly, questions him, remembering her prince, while the tears run down her cheeks†¦ (Homer 391) Penelope is unwilling to betray her husband or even his memory. Even when her secret is revealed and she is forced to make her decision, she still manages to postpone the day of her marriage. Penelope makes her suitors compete. Even when the wise woman understands that she has no choice and she has to choose a new husband, she makes a wise choice. She invents another trial for the suitors. She makes the suitors understand that she can marry only the most deserving man who could be as strong as Odysseus (Steinruck 113). She Tries Her Own Husband Apart f rom trials for her suitors, she wants to make sure that the man who claims to be her husband is really her beloved. Her faithfulness does not allow her to accept the man unless she is perfectly sure that the man is her husband. The woman feels that the beggar is her husband, but she wants to make sure (Steinruck 114). Steinruck suggests that Penelope understands that the beggar is Odysseus but still keeps asking and trying him â€Å"for the playful revenge she takes on Odysseus because he misled her† (114). Nonetheless, her reluctance is more likely to be a sign of her great faith. She makes everyone understand that there is only one man who can be beside her. It goes without saying that Penelope’s faithfulness is one of the features ascribed to heroes. Only real heroes can be that faithful to their beloved (or to some ideas). Penelope is faithful to both her husband and her idea of marriage. She believes she can belong to one man only and she remains faithful to this idea no matter what. It is also important to note that her faith makes her that courageous and wise. Like any other hero, Penelope is guided by her faith. She performs heroic deeds in the name of her ideas. This makes her one of the main heroes of the epic. Conclusion It is important to remember that Penelope is one of the main heroes of the epic. This courageous woman has all features of a great hero. She manages to keep the kingdom prosperous. It is necessary to note that she manages to rule even though women in Ancient Greece were to fulfill female tasks only. She does not exercise her power overtly. However, Penelope is a wise advisor who helps the young Telemachus to rule the kingdom. Apart from being a wise ruler (like any other hero), she is also ready to sacrifice everything. Thus, the kingdom as well as her own son is in danger, so she does not care about her well-being. Penelope is ready to remarry (which means death for her) in order to save her homeland. Finally, the wis e woman is faithful. She never betrays her husband, her love and her principles. Admittedly, this faithfulness can be regarded as a heroic feature. It is also important to note that Penelope should be considered a hero as she performs heroic deeds and she can be characterized by major heroic features. At the same time, she is a woman who has to comply with conventions of the patriarchal world. More so, she can be regarded as one of the major heroes as she reveals great courage to save the entire kingdom when her royal husband is away. Admittedly, Odysseus himself in many situations is not as courageous as his wise wife as the former often flees from dangerous situations whereas Penelope has to remain in the place where she can be destroyed. Penelope has the courage to face her enemies, which makes her a great hero. Works Cited Clark, Susan H., and Valerie L. Nazi Art Essays - German Art, Nazi Propaganda, Nazi Architecture

Nazi Art Essays - German Art, Nazi Propaganda, Nazi Architecture Nazi Art Many people know that Adolph Hitler was an artist in his youth as an Austrian, but just how much art played a role in the National Socialist Germany seems to get underrated in the history books. Just as a racial war was waged against the Jewish population and the military fought the French and the Slavic people, an artistic cleansing for the Germanic culture was in progress. Special Nazi units were searching the ancient arts of antiquity for evidence of a great Germanic race that existed well before history. Hitler had monuments and museums built on a grand scale with carefully designed architecture that would last a thousand years. Art of this nature was a priority because Hitler wanted to capture Chronos, not Gaea. He wanted to dominate the rest of time, not the limits of Earth. Hitler was born and raised in the town of Linz. As a youth he studied art, primarily as a painter capturing mostly the surrounding Alpine Mountain landscapes that he grew up with, but he also had an interest in architecture. When he turned eighteen he applied to the Vienna Art Academy, and was rejected. Along with art, Hitler was fascinated with Linz, Antiquity, and Wagner. It was at this time in his youth that Hitler and his friend, Kubicheck would try to finish an opera that Wagner had abandoned. This opera was about a leader trying to establish the Roman Empire by overthrowing the Papal government in Rome. Hitler would remember It was in that hour it all began.1 Hitler thought of Wagner and art as the basis for a new government, nation, and people. It is not just coincidence that he would be surrounded by National Socialist leaders with background in the arts. Joseph Gobbels, the Minister of Propaganda and head of the Reich Chamber of Culture, was an experienced writer and aspiring poet. Rosenberg was a painter and Von Sherot wrote poetry. Hans Frederick Munch of the Reich's Chamber of Literature said This government born out of opposition to rationalism knows the peoples inner longings and dreams, which only the artist can give them.2 Less than three months after coming to power, the Nazis issued What German artists expect of their new government in March of 1933. One of the first projects of the Nazi regime was the House of German Art (Haus der Deutschen Kunst), a large museum. Quickly the Third Reich was forming it's own style of art, as identifiable as Soviet Social- Realism, but symbolizing the national and racial policies. And while the Soviets tended to emphasize Literature, the Nazis focused on Visual art and Architecture. Nazi art was Neo- Classical with a twist of German romanticism, heroicism, and nostalgia for the times of yore.3 In the beginning there was debate on what exactly the Nazis were looking for in art. It is well known that the Third Reich was extremely hostile to Avant-Garde artists, but before the Nazis came to power, Joseph Goebbels took to the opinion that some German Expressionists were compatible with National Socialist ideas. These artists include Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Erich Heckel, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, Ernst Barlach, and Emil Nolde. Nolde was even a Nazi party member, but these artists could hardly be called Nazi artists. They declared nationalism and were very anti-capitalist. The Expressionists promoted sensation and passion over rational logic and were heavily into primitive German culture. Hitler, Alfred Rosenberg, and other senior Nazis attacked these modern artists as incompatible with the Nazi ideal because of there strong opposition to authoritarianism and the individualism expressed within their work.4 Albert Speer, commissioned to decorate Goebbels home would later write: I borrowed a few watercolours from ... the director of the Berlin Nationalgalerie. Goebbels and his wife were delighted with the paintings-until Hitler came to inspect, and expressed his severe disapproval. Then the minister summoned me immediately. 'The pictures will have to go at once; they're simply impossible'.5 Upon the assumption of power, almost all modern art was attacked and artists of all sorts fled the country as work was confiscated and art schools were closed. There are many reasons Hitler attacked modern art. Such groups as the Dadaists and the Bauhaus had close connections with the Soviet schools of Constructivism and Suprematism. These groups, while not necessarily Communist, were overly leftist ranging the gauntlet from Socialism to Anarchism and was extremely anti-military. Hitler also attacked the aesthetics of modern art. The Bauhaus was ultra-modern and cosmopolitan in it's designs. It's creations were seamless global industrial
